May I offer what I think Cynics fail to understand about aspirations -- Yes, we are not (yet) practising what we are reciting, but it doesn't mean that the whole purpose is vacuous. The Americans took a few hundred years to arrive at what how close one can uphold the ideals today, so this is the empirical evidence of its worth.

What we need the most now to discuss where we should step next in this long journey, and not lamenting why the next step doesn't bring us there. If one cannot reconcile with reality, then one fails to get on board.

Adrian - read Skeptic's post again carefully. He's (cynically, and rightly so) saying that in his mind our MM, by saying what he said in parliament, had basically dismissed our pledge as wayang.

Skeptic - I feel somewhat insulted that you've just dismissed our pledge-taking as just one big "wayang". I happen to take our pledge very seriously, I mean every word when I say it, and I most definitely do NOT appreciate being referred to as "wayang".

Some people have written about examples of very real racial and religious discrimination still happening in Singapore. To me, this just means that those of us who want to believe in and fight for greater equality just have to do that little bit more in our own small personal ways.

I can understand people calling our pledge still more of an aspiration than a reality, but to dismiss it as "wayang"? I think you show your true colours here.

it seems to me that many who have posted here so far are highly intellectuals who have the capacity to write incredibly well about small issues and turned them into something big

Get real, people, life is more than a few bombastic words. Why dun you share an experience of what it is like to conquer mt Everest or complete a marathon or being victorious over a life threatening experience or illness? Dr William's life is a good example to start with. What can we learn from him?

When I oppose, you can bet that I oppose with my heart and mind. I do not oppose blindly. I oppose the present government because it is my sincere and hearfelt belief that this government is only good at running Singapore Inc (not that it is good in this aspect either) and definitely detrimental to the growth of Singapore as a nation. For the sake of my country (of which I have a direct stake). For my conscience. How can we tolerate lack of accountability, wayang, ineptitude? Can you tolerate these traits in your your boss or your organization? The negative things outweight the positive.

Its exactly how I have seen it, something so familiar. Ah, its another platform for 'nation-building'. Seriously, do you scholars think that this is the way forward?

Your blog is but another exercise to neutralise ill feelings. The whole post, to be blunt, has no substance. One glaring eg why I think this is the case: Transparency is transparency, there is no such thing as 'more transparency' (last 4th para).

Couple of other egs:

"After all, a person’s views stem most of the time from their personal experiences. Something which i will not fully comprehend as i have never shared in their personal struggles."

- Brilliant, then anyone can say anything without any substantiation. I must mention unless you are on the opposing side. (side note: So, no suing please as those who sue never shared in the opposers personal struggles.)

"Overall, I personally thought Mr Sadasivan addressed too many concerns in one sitting, and perhaps this diluted the gravity of each point he tried to address."

- This only serves to throw smoke to the issues raised. Is this article commenting on the contents of the points raised or on the presentation of the speech?

Give up on you lot!

"I think what viewers of this blog would like to see is that you guys – the authors who are handpicked (read as tasked) and groomed (read as brainwashed) – can provide some disagreeing views on policies or how things are run in this country. "

I for one sincerely hope, this blog will not come to that, where the mantra is disagree for the sake of disagreement.

A better way would be to be to present your point of view independently and objectively without having any regard to the govt of the day and sharing with us all why you believe this should be like that.

The Singapore Angle is a pretty good blog to emulate. The brotherhud of nod led by darkness is also another cracker and several other independent contributors who write for The Online Citizen like Farahquar.

Do keep up the good work.

I think most people will agree that the government has done reasonably well to arrive at where we are today. Even the cynical ones, though they are unlikely to openly admit this. So pls do not take offense when I say that your post is not entirely earth shattering.

I think what viewers of this blog would like to see is that you guys - the authors who are handpicked (read as tasked) and groomed (read as brainwashed) - can provide some disagreeing views on policies or how things are run in this country. Surely no 2 persons can agree on everything, and therefore your views cannot possibly align with the leaders all the time.

In fact, it will be nice to see the reversal of roles, whereby the authors write something personal, something that they have issues with and let the viewers (esp. the skeptical ones) defend the leaders, policies or whatever. I'm certain even the skeptics cannot disagree forever.

Right now, every post here is rather predictable. You guys write something inspirational and someone comes along and trample it.

Besides, it will be comforting to see a maverick or two around here. Someone who is not a yes man, and will openly stand up for his beliefs. When this happens, I think we would have more meaningful discussions.
